Class 110(3) [Also in Group XXXIII] In a jet propulsion nozzle in which the area of the nozzle is varied or the jet deflected by an auxiliary screen-like jet issuing into the nozzle in a direction which is generally perpendicular or inclined upstream with respect to the axis of the nozzle, the momentum of the auxiliary jet is increased by heating or by injecting a vaporizable liquid into it or both. In the gas turbine jet propulsion engine shown the propulsion nozzle 5 has an annular slot 6, inclined in the upstream direction, connected to a chamber 7 supplied with gas under pressure from the compressor 2 through a control vaive 9 and combustion chamber 10. The combustion chamber 10 may be replaced by a spray injector fed with water or other liquid such as methanol. The application of the invention to a gas turbine jet propulsion engine with an exhaust heater is described. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3 the jet is deflected through vanes 17 by an auxiliary fluid supplied to a hollow streamlined body 13. Specifications 691,302, 745,630, 750,601 are referred to.
