Abstract
<PICT:0749915/III/1> An apparatus for supporting a bed of solids to be contacted with a fluid comprises a grate part having a set of flat bars mounted parallel with their upper surfaces sloping but inclined to the horizontal at an angle less than the angle of repose of the solids to be supported and having a ratio of width to pitch which allows free access of the solids into the spaces between the bars but which prevents free passage of the solids through the grate while the grate is static, a limited support part having a series of slats mounted to define a series of channels parallel with the bars of the grate but inclined at an angle substantially greater than the angle of repose of the solids, and vibrator means for vibrating the grade and the limited-support part to induce a flow of solids through the grate. As shown in Fig. 1, the grate comprises spaced flat bars 1 which are secured to opposite sides of a frame 2, and a series of metal slats 4 secured to opposite sides of a second frame 5. The frames are suspended for operation on hangers 3 and 6 and arms 7 and 8 are connected to the same or different vibrating means so that the bars 1 and slats 4 can be vibrated simultaneously or independently of each other. The bottom edges of the bars 1 and the slats 4 are stiffened by flanges as shown. In a modification the slats 4 are formed integrally with the bars 1 and preferably the grate is constructed as described in Specification 749,916 so that it forms the bottom closure for a vessel containing the bed of solids. When the grate is used with iron oxide gas purification material incorporating wooden chips the minimum frequency of vibration giving satisfactory discharge is about 500 cycles per minute when the moisture content of the purification material is about 15 per cent. A satisfactory amplitude of vibration is from 1/50 to 1/16th inch. Specification 702,529 also is referred to.
