[Also in Group II] An oscillatory sieve comprises a funnel shaped casing 8, resiliently supported on springs 6, containing water and having a valve 34 at its lower end. A sieve casing 1 comprises lateral side walls connected by transverse beams 36, preferably of rhombic cross-section, and having a sieve surface 17, 18, part of which is below the water level. A tube 25 extends through the funnel casing and houses a crankshaft 13 having two cranks 11 joined by connecting rods 12 to bars 28 secured to the sieve casing which is also supported in the funnel casing by links 3. In the dead centre position of the crank the connecting rods 12 preferably lies in a plane, at right angles to the plane of the Figure, containing the centre of gravity SS of the sieve casing and the centre of gravity ST of the funnel casing and water, the diagonals of rhombic beams making an angle of approximately 7 degrees with this plane. The transverse beams 36 are spaced below the sieve screen and connected to transverse plate supporting the screen by web members which allow flow of water between these members. Granular material to be screened and/or washed is fed to the steep part 17 of the sieve and by oscillation of the apparatus the screened and/or washed granules rise up the part 18 and are discharged at 4. A spray 2 may be provided at the end of the sieve. The fine particles washed off and passing through the sieve settle and are removed through the valve 34.
