Abstract

749,869. Photographic material. KODAK, Ltd. Nov. 2, 1953 [Oct. 31, 1952], No. 30272/53. Class 98 (2). Photographic material comprises a support, a light-sensitive emulsion layer, and a waterpermeable hydrophilic colloid layer containing a resin having a polymeric hydrocarbon chain having substituted at recurring intervals phenyl groups and carboxylic groups, together with carbonamide, carbonimide or dicarboxylic imide groups, and also containing an ultra-violet radiation absorbing compound of one of the general formulae wherein R, R 1 , R 2 and R 3 each represents an alkyl, group, R 4 is an alkyl group containing at least 9 carbon atoms, X is an acid radical, and Z and Z 1 each represent the atoms necessary to complete a benzoxazole, thiazoline, thiazole, or benzthiazole nucleus. Dyes specified include- 3 - ethyl - 3<SP>1</SP> - n lauryloxathiazolinocyanine iodide, 3 - carboxymethyl - 3<SP>1</SP> - ethylthiacyanine iodide, 3: 3<SP>1</SP>-diethyloxacyanine chloride, [1-neicosyl - 2 : 5 - dimethylpyrrole - (3)] [3-ethylbenzoxazole-(2)]-dimethinecyanine iodide, and 3 - ethyl - 31 : 4<SP>1</SP> - diphenylthiathiazblocyanine iodide. The resin may be a styrene-maleanic acid interpolymer or a corresponding resin derived from styrene-acrylic acid, styrenemethacrylic acid, or styrene-itaconic acid interpolymers by reaction with ammonia or an amine. In Example 1, a dried coating containing " Amberlite " W-1 (Registered Trade Mark) and gelatin on a processed colour film is soaked in an aqueous solution of 3: 31-diethyloxacyanine chloride. In Example 2, the procedure is similar, using styrene-maleamic acid resin. In Example 3, a comparison is drawn between gelatin layers and gelatin plus styrenemaleamic acid resin layers soaked in solutions of 3 - ethyl - 31 - n - lauryloxathiazolinocyanine iodide, 3 : 3<SP>1</SP> - diethyl - 5 : 5<SP>1</SP> - diphenyloxacyanine chloride, [1 - n - cetyl - 2 : 5 - dimethylpyrrole-(3)] [3 - ethylbenzoxazole - (2)] - dimethinecyanine chloride, 3 - carboxymethyl - 3<SP>1</SP>- ethylthiacyanine iodide, and 3: 31-diethylthiacyanine p-toluenesulphonate. The layers may be coated on the emulsion side of a lightsensitive colour film. The photographic element having a gelatin layer containing the synthetic resin may be bathed in an aqueous solution of the cyanine dye. The gelatin may be replaced by another water-permeable hydrophilic colloid such as polyvinyl acetal, hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, or a hydrolysed cellulose eater. In multilayer colour photographic material, the ultra-violet absorbing layer may be placed between the blue and green sensitive layers or between the green and red sensitive layers. Specifications 419,361, 423,792, 504,821, 529,440, 665,288 and 711,488 are referred to.
