Abstract

In making resilient rollers especially for printing, metal spindles are covered with polyurethane synthetic resins produced by the reaction of cross-linkable polyesters with diisocyanates; small amounts of plasticiser may be added to the mixture. The mixture may be introduced into a mould containing a metal (e.g. steel) spindle by pouring, centrifuging (to a layer of 8 millimetres to 30 millimetres thickness) or injection under pressure and then allowed to react at room temperature or with slight heating. The method may be modified by centrifuging a surface layer and then filling the space between the surface layer and the spindle with the same material which may be softer than the surface layer. In an example, 100 parts by weight of polypropylene adipate were mixed by stirring at 110 DEG C. successively with 20 parts of dioctyl phthalate and 17 parts of naphthylene-1,5-di-isocyanate; after 10 minutes 2 parts of butylene-1,4-glycol were added to the mixture which was then poured into the moulds and kept for three hours at a temperature of 110 DEG to 120 DEG C.ALSO:Resilient rollers especially for printing have a surface made from polyurethane synthetic resins produced by the reaction of cross-linkable polyesters with di-isocyanates; varying amounts of plastizer may be added to the mixture to adjust the softness. The mixture may be introduced into a mould containing a metal (e.g. steel) spindle by pouring, centrifuging (to a layer of 8 millimetres to 30 millimetres thickness) or injection under pressure, and then allowed to react at room temperature or with slight heating. The method may be modified by centrifuging a surface layer and then filling the space between the surface layer and the spindle with the same material which may be softer than the surface layer. In an example 100 parts by weight of polypropylene adipate were mixed by stirring at 110 DEG C. successively with 20 parts of dioctyl phthalate and 17 parts of naphthylene-1, 5, -di-isocyanate; after 10 minutes 2 parts of butylene -1, 4 glycol were added to the mixture which was then poured into the moulds and kept for three hours at a temperature of 100 to 120 DEG C.
