Abstract

Abrasion-resistant catalyst stores for the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide are prepared by forming a mixture of, as the first component, a catalytic material capable of decomposing hydrogen peroxide, e.g. magnesium dioxide or cobalt oxide, or a substance, e.g. alkali metal permanganate, which when decomposed by heat yields the same and, as the second component, lead monoxide or dioxide or a mixture thereof, into pellets, cubes or other shaped bodies with the aid of a refractory cement such as Portland cement, drying and then strongly heating the pellets to sinter the lead oxide but without fusing the whole of the pellets. The stones preferably contain a small amount of free alkali e.g. potassium hydroxide, and when the initial mixture contains potassium permanganate, manganese dioxide and free alkali are formed therefrom during the sintering operation. In addition to potassium permanganate, soluble salts which are reactive with hydrogen peroxide, e.g. potassium iodide and potassium chromate, may also be incorporated.
