749,390. Making electrical contacts. MALLORY METALLURGICAL PRODUCTS, Ltd. Nov. 12, 1954 [Aug. 27, 1953], No. 23694/53. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Powder metallurgy.-In a method of making an electrical contact, a powder compact having a facing layer in which precious metal predominates and a backing layer of a base metal is sintered to form a composite contact piece which is then subjected to a pressing operation to extrude a shank or riveting portion from the backing layer. In a modification a composite sintered strip is formed and the contact pieces are punched from the strip and then pressed to extrude the shank portion. In an example 700 grams precipitated silver powder and 300 grams carbonyl nickel powder were mixed in a porcelain mill for 6 hours and screened through a 60 mesh sieve. To make a single contact piece 0.013 grams of the mixture was placed in a die of 0.182 inch diameter on top of the same weight of electrolytic copper powder of between 100 and 300 mesh. The double layer was then compressed to a density of 7.5 grams/cc. to produce a compact 0.080 inch thick which is sintered at 750‹ C. in cracked ammonia for 15 minutes. Instead of a single compacting step, the powder may be lightly pressed, sintered at 800-900‹ C., repressed and resintered at a temperature below 780‹ C. The sintered contact piece is then pressed to extrude the shank portion. Specification 642,648 is referred to.
