Abstract
749,370. Transformers and inductors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 18, 1954 [Feb. 20, 1953], No. 4806/53. Class 38 (2). [Also in Group XL (c)] An electrical component such as an inductor 1 is protected by embedding it in an insulating casing which comprises a cushioning member 4, the casing being made by the method which consists in heating the component to a temperature of about 120‹ C., embedding the component or part thereof in a polyvinyl chloride paste capable of foaming when heated, heating the coated component in a mould shaped to contain the foaming polyvinyl chloride around the component, removing the coated component from the mould and casting a mineral filled polyester resin body 5 around the coated component to completely embed it therein. The expanded polyvinyl chloride is produced from a paste consisting of a dispersion of polyvinyl chloride in a plasticizer to which is added a compound which liberates a gas, e.g. nitrogen, at a temperature in the region of 100‹ C. The Specification contains examples of compounds releasing nitrogen under these conditions, such compounds sometimes being called " blowing agents." An example is also given of the composition of a suitable paste.
