Abstract

Phthalocyanine sulphochlorides are reacted with 4-amino -41- nitrodiphenylamine -21- sulphonic acid to give the sulphonamides and hydrolysing any unreacted sulphochloride groups may be saponified to sulphonic groups or their ammonium or alkali metal salts. The products are soluble in water and organic solvents, colour leather, paper and lacquers, and form lakes with salts of calcium, barium, strontium, aluminium, manganese, or iron. In examples, (1) a mixture of copper phthalocyanine tri- and tetra-sulphochlorides is reacted to the extent of one sulphochloride group with 4-amino -41- nitrodiphenylamino -21- sulphonic acid in aqueous ammoniacal solution, the other sulphochloride groups being hydrolysed to sulphonic groups which from salts with the ammonia or with potash, ethanolamine, or diethylamine, or to the extent of more sulphochloride groups. Also in examples, (2) cobalt and aluminium phthalocyanine sulphochlorides are reacted similarly. Nickel, iron, chromium, zinc, metal-free and tin phthalocyanine sulphochlorides may also be used.
