Abstract
749,310. Locking-screws. NATIONAL MACHINE PRODUCTS CO. April 20, 1953, No. 10802/53. Class 89 (1). [Also in Group XXVII] A self-locking screw, particularly an adjusting-screw in internal-combustion engine valve gear, comprises a hollow, substantially cylindrical threaded body 15, Fig. 9, screwing into an aperture having a thread of uniform pitch diameter and provided with a tool-engageable head 12 and hardened bearing portion 11, the screw being made self-locking by having an intermediate portion 18, Fig. 10, of its threaded part expanded outwards to a pitch diameter such that when the screw is threaded into the aperture the expanded part is an interference fit therein. The leading turn or turns of the screw are of a diameter to screw easily into the corresponding threaded aperture in the valve rocker while one or more longitudinal segments of the intermediate portion are expanded to a greater diameter as shown at 18, 19, 20, Fig. 10. Slots 30 may be provided between the expanded segments to render the expanded portion resilient. In a modification the part 11 is formed as a socket to receive the spherical end of a push-rod.
