749,137. Covering wire cores with string. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. Dec. 7, 1954 [Dec. 8, 1953], No. 34121/53. Class 109. Apparatus for helically lapping a string 1 from a package 2 on an axially moving wire 3, is furnished with a guide 5 rotatable about the path of the wire, the guide being carried by a plate 16 driven by a gear 15 and hollow spindle 14, the string being lapped firstly about a smooth, cylindrical stationary body 12 about the surface of which rotates, in close proximity thereto, a helical guiding member 18 which spaces the turns of string and advances them towards a device 7 comprising a plate 19, grooved at 20 to contain the wire and string, a spring-pressed plate 21 bearing upon the wrapped wire with adjustable force. The dimensions of the body 12 and spacing of the helices are so chosen that there is virtually no tension in the string as it passes from the body 12 on to the wire 3 in the device 7. The package 2 is held against a spring-urged concave plate 33 so as to give a substantially uniform braking force upon the package as it unwinds.
