Abstract
749,023. Fluid friction brakes. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. Sept. 17, 1953 [Jan. 29, 1953], No. 25711/53. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XIII] A combined heater and pump unit for fluids comprises a vaned rotor 20 in the form of an impeller mounted on a shaft which is rotatable within a housing 1, and a further rotor 23 rotatably mounted on said shaft, means being provided whereby one of the rotors may be selectively braked relative to the other so that fluid entering the housing through an inlet 6 near the centre thereof will be heated by slippage and turbulence before being forced from a peripheral outlet 9 from the housing by centrifugal force. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement in which the rotor 20 is mounted on a shaft 13 driven by a pulley 18. The rotor 23 which has a hub 22, rotates freely on the shaft 13. Electromagnetic elements 25. 26 are mounted respectively on the hub 22 and in the cover 11 of the housing whereby the rotor 23 may be braked relative to the rotor 20 thus creating friction heat in the fluid pumped through the housing by the rotor 20. The braking means may alternatively comprise a friction disc brake or an electro-dynamic coupling. The braking effect is controlled by an element responsive to the temperature of the heated fluid. An arrangement is described in which the heating and pumping unit is incorporated in the cooling system of an internalcombustion engine, the heating effect being utilized to enable the engine operating temperature to be attained more rapidly on starting and also for supplementing the engine heat in a space heater, the unit being driven by the engine and the heating effect being regulated by a thermostat in the engine cooling system.
