Abstract

748,948. Locking bolt-like pins; nuts. BAKER & FINNEMORE, Ltd. April 1, 1954 [April 1, 1953], No. 9015/53. Class 89 (1). A sheet-metal retaining device, e.g. for securing a cylindrical stud 21, Fig. 4, comprises an annular spring steel body 10, Fig. 1, having a dished inner portion 11 surrounded by a flat portion 12 with a continuous circumferential flange 13 extending radially and axially in the same axial direction as the dishing, which may be conoidal or spheroidal. Portion 11 is divided into a number of fingers by radial slots 14 or slits extending from the inner periphery 15 to the junction of portions 11, 12 and having rounded ends 17. Where slits are used, they terminate in holes adjacent the junction of portions 11, 12. The fingers provide a substantially continuous line of contact with the surface of the stud and the slots or slits are each arranged to lie obliquely to the grain of the metal. According to the Provisional Specification the device may be adapted to engage a screw-thread by twisting the fingers, or may have the exterior periphery slit into fingers for engaging an internal cylindrical surface.
