A privy closet, particularly for use in unsewered areas, adapted for incineration of faecal matter consists of a receptacle having an electric element in the form of a grid heater 26 positioned near and across the bottom above an outlet 23 to a sump 18 connected to liquid dispersing means by a pipe 25, a switch controlling the. power supply to the heater, a vent outlet 10 from the receptacle positioned above the heater, and a seat 38 and lid 39 above the receptacle. A time switch may be used to control the power to the heater, and shutters 42 may be arranged to close when the lid is closed by means of rods and cranks 44 and 43.
