Abstract

In producing colour effects similar to prismatic dispersion effects by reflected or refracted light at a diffraction grating in the production of a decorative article such as an artificial gem stone or in decorating an article such as a powder compact, the grooves of the diffraction grating are of saw tooth cross-section of which one face is wider than the other and is a plane face and the maximum tooth depth is equal to a/2n, n being the refractive index of the medium and a the average wavelength of the incident light. The face of the gem stone on which the grating is provided is protected against wear as by a covering of protective varnish or of transparent material such as that of which the stone is made or the said face may be enclosed in the setting of the stone. The grating may be provided on a sheet of transparent material secured with the grating adjacent the stone. The grating may be formed in situ on the material, or when this latter is a thermoplastic such as polystyrene or methyl methacrylate the grating may be formed thereon by moulding the material in a metal form having the grating ruled on one surface. The grating may be metallized to produce a highly reflecting surface.
