Abstract

748,138. Suction devices for handling articles. KODAK, Ltd. April 14, 1954 [April 14, 1953] No. 10162/53. Class 78 (4). Gas blown through an outwardly directed annular slit 6 in a gripping device produces suction between an article 18 and the device. The nozzle 6 is formed between a conical member 3 and a conical recess 2 formed in a block 1 and communicating by passages 17 with a connection 16 to a source of gas under pressure. The slit 6 may be of rectangular or other closed outline instead of annular and a raised portion on the surface of the member 3 may space the article 18 from the gripper. Preferred dimensions for the slit are stated in the Specification. The face 13b of the device may be curved to conform with the surface of the article to be gripped. The device may be formed by inserting an oversized conical member 3 in the conical recess 2 and grinding or machining away the protruding portion of the member 3. This may leave a slit 6 which is normally closed but opens by flexure of the edges 4 of the member 3 when gas under pressure is applied. The device may be of brass.
