Abstract

748,129. Washing- and drying-machines. HOOVER, Ltd. Nov. 27, 1953 [Dec. 1, 1952], No. 30474/52. Class 138 (2). In a washing-machine including a motor 14 for driving an impeller 13 in a washing liquid container 11, and a pump 21 for applying suction to a squeeze drier 12 incorporating a squeezing chamber independent of the washing container 11, both the impeller 13 and the pump 21 are permanently connected to be driven by the motor 14 all the .time the motor is running. The squeeze drier comprises a rubber bag 25 having a cover comprising an outer lid 34 and an inner perforated lid 38, suction being applied to the space between the lids. The outer lid may be moulded from synthetic resin and has a grid of ribs 36. The inner lid may be of pressed aluminium, is formed with indentations 40 and is secured to the outer lid by screws (not seen). The bag 25 has a flange 26 secured to a platform 27 by a clamping ring 28 and screws 29. The flange 26 also forms a sealing surface for a rib 35 on the outer lid 34. The cover is mounted by a universal joint 52, 53 on an arm 50 pivoted at 51. A valve 57 (Fig. 7, not shown) can be operated against the bias of a spring 60 by means of a button 69 to release the vacuum in the bag. This valve comprises a slidable member 57 having a diametral slot 62 and a flange 58 and packing ring 59. The button 69 is mounted on an arm 65 pivoted at 66 and having projections engaging below the flange 58. A longitudinally movable spring biased link 70 co-operates with the arm 65 to hold the valve open when the button 69 has been depressed. The link 70 is pivoted to one arm 71 of a bell crank pivoted at 51, the other arm 74 of the bell crank being adapted to engage a fixed stop 75 when the cover is opened so as to allow the valve 57 to close again. The bag is connected to the suction pump 21 by a flexible pipe 46 secured to a connection 45 moulded integrally with the flange 26. The motor 14 also drives a pump 18 for emptying the washing container 11. The pump 18 may be of centrifugal or other non-positive type permanently connected to the motor 14 through friction wheels 19, 20, and provided with means for closing the passage for liquid to or from it to prevent undesired emptying of the container, e.g. as in Specification 701,977. Delivery pipes 78, 79 for the emptying pump 18 and suction pump 21 respectively communicate with a common outlet 80 comprising a flexible hose 83 and swivel connection 81. The pipe 78 may be closed by a tap comprising a fixed washer and a spring-biased head (Fig. 6, not shown). Steps 95, 96 co-operate to keep the tap open when its handle 94 is raised and turned. A non-return rubber-clad ball valve 99 in the pipe 79 prevents water from being slowly drawn back into the bag 25 through the pump if the motor is left switched off without releasing the vacuum. Specifications 612,737 and 748,128 also are referred to.
