Class 123(1) An apparatus for giving an alarm when oil in a motor vehicle engine casing reaches the lowest permissible level consists of a metal tube 1 provided at the top with a handle 3 and a cap 2, the latter engaging over a duct 4 provided in the engine casing 5 for accommodating the usual dip-stick, the tube 1 passing down the duct to dip into the oil in the casing. The lower part of the tube has external "low" and "high" level marks 17, 18 and is cut away as indicated at 7 to provide a portion 8 insulated from the rest of the tube by sleeves 9, 10. The portion 8 is connected by conductors 13 15 to a red lamp or a buzzer on the vehicle dashboard. A conical-ended metal float 11 is housed in tube 1 between the sleeves 9, 10. As the oil level drops, the float descends, eventually coming into contact with a sloping tongue 12 pressed inwardly from portion 8 down which it slides until. at the minimum oil level, it contacts the tube 1, as shown in Fig. 5, and completes the alarm circuit.
