Abstract

Coloured thermoplastic masses suitable for injection moulding are obtained by treating thermoplastic polymers, e.g. polystyrene, chlorinated polystyrene, polyethylene, polyacrylic and polymethacrylic acid esters, polyvinyl carbazole, polyvinyl acetals, polyvinyl and polyvinylide chlorides, in granular or bead form with a dispersion of a non-oil-soluble pigment in a readily volatile organic solvent which does not swell or dissolve the polymer and in which is dissolved a resin such as hydrogenated acetophenone - formaldehyde, cyclohexanone - formaldehyde, and colophony-maleic anhydride resins, colophony and copal resin, and finally removing the solvent. Solvents mentioned are methyl and ethyl alcohols. In examples, granular polystyrene is coloured by stirring with a methanol solution of hydrogenated acetophenone-formaldehyde resin, in which are suspended iron oxide or titanium dioxide. After evaporation of the solvents injection moulding yields uniformly coloured products.
