Abstract

Polymers, e.g. polyethylene, polystyrene, and polyvinyl chloride, acetate or alcohol, which have been irradiated with ionizing radiations, e.g. with up to 4 units, so as to increase their resistance to organic solvents and cold drawing, are welded together by interposing polymers of the same composition which have received a substantially smaller amount of ionizing radiation, e.g. less than 1 unit, and subjecting the whole to pressure at a raised temperature. In an example, sheets of polyethylene irradiated with 4.7 units are welded together by interposing a film irradiated with 0.25 units and subjecting to pressure at 110 DEG C. for half an hour. In a modification, two polythene powders irradiated with larger and smaller amounts are mixed and moulded by normal thermoplastic moulding technique.
