Abstract

A disinfectant comprises a mixture of a soap, a bactericidal phenol derivative and a salt of a carboxylic acid of the general formula (HOOCR1)2N - R - N(R1COOH)2 R and R1 being divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon residues, and the salt being derived from an inorganic or an organic base. The soaps are used in the form of the alkali or amine salts of fatty acids which are obtained as saponification products of the natural oils and fats, such as linseed oil, rape oil, castor oil, palm kernel oil, and soya bean oil. There may also be used long-chain soaplike carboxylic acids having the alkyl residue intersected by a hetero atom such as oxygen, sulphur or nitrogen, for example the so-called alkylether carboxylic acids. The bactericidal phenol derivative may be selected from the compounds customarily used in disinfectants which have at least one phenolic hydroxyl group attached to the aromatic ring and which may in addition have other substituents e.g. phenol, cresol, xylenol, thymol, carvacrol, propylphenol, butylphenol, hexylphenol, octylphenol, phenylphenol, benzylphenol, benzylcresol; further, condensation products of phenol derivatives with formaldehyde, such as 2, 21-dihydroxy-5, 51-dichloro-diphenylmethane, 2, 21-dihydroxy-3, 5, 6, 31, 51, 61-hexachloro-diphenylmethane, as well as all halogenated and alkylated position isomers of these, may be used. Mixtures of individual phenols may also be used such as, for instance, a mixture of p-chloro-m-cresol and p-chloro-sym. xylenol, and also mixtures of isomeric compounds of the same formula, for example a mixture of o- and - phenylphenol. According to a preferred form of the invention, the carboxylic acid salt is a salt of ethylenediamine-tetra-acetic acid, a part of the phenol derivative suitably consists of an alkali salt of p-chloro-m-cresol, and the potassium salts of all the ingredients are advantageously employed.
