Abstract
747,024. Heating vehicles. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO., Ltd. July 13, 1954 [Aug. 11, 1953], No. 22155/53. Class 64(2). In a vehicle-heating apparatus, engine coolant flows through a pipe 8, from a pipe 5 interconnecting the cooling jacket of the engine 1 and radiator 2, to at least one heater 7 for heating air to be passed to the vehicle interior and windscreen and then returns by a pipe 9 to the cooling circuit. Moreover, the heat of this coolant is boosted by passing coolant from the engine jacket or, as shown, from the pipe 5 or by an alternative connection 22 from the pipe 8, by way of a pipe 11 to a tank 10 and pump 19 to be heated in a jacket 13 on the exhaust pipe and thence passed to a thermally controlled valve 16, which, if the coolant is hot enough, directs it to the pipe 8, but, if it is not, diverts it through a pipe 18 back to the tank. The pump 19 may be interposed between the jacket 13 and valve 16. To prevent coolant flowing from the booster system back to the cooling system before it has passed through the air heater 7, there are non-return valves 20 in the pipe 8 and in the feed to the tank 10.
