Abstract

746,729. Spring suspensions; vehicle underframes; laminated springs. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. June 10, 1954 [June 10, 1953], No. 17155/54. Classes 108 (2) and 108 (3). [Also in Group XXXI] In a wheel suspension and springing means for a motor vehicle comprising plate springs of diminishing width from their points of attachment to the vehicle frame to their ends which are connected with wheel carriers, and in which the attachment of the springs is preferably effected by means engaging an imperforate area thereof, two such springs extend transversely to opposite sides of the point of attachment, each spring has its two ends adapted for connection to a wheel carrier, whereby two front wheels or two rear wheels are supported between the superposed ends of the two plate springs only. In the arrangement shown, each of two superposed springs 1, 2 is attached to a central longitudinal frame member 6 by clamping plates 3 and nuts and bolts 4, 5, the bolts penetrating lugs 10 situated outside the spring clamping area 9. The free ends of the springs are provided with bores housing ball sockets by which the springs are connected to wheel carriers 15. An engine 19 is mounted in a recess 18 in the frame member 6. In another arrangement, Figs. 3 to 6 (not shown), in which the central frame member is of hollow hexagonal section, front steerable wheels are supported substantially as in Fig. 1, while rear wheel carriers are rockably articulated about upper and lower pins to upper and lower springs which diverge from one another from the central clamping areas symmetrically of a horizontal plane containing the axes of the wheel stub axles. At each end of the frame only two bolts are used to anchor the springs, the bolts passing through the hollow frame member.
