Abstract

746,587. Sausage skins. ETHICON, Inc. Oct. 6, 1954 [Oct. 16, 1953], No. 28811/54. Class 28(2). [Also in Group XXV] An upper arc of the outer skin 1 of an animal intestine is prised away from the internal layer 4 by diverging guides, e.g. spring wire loops 13 and 15, entered between the layers at the arc only and over which the intestine is then drawn. The upper arc-like part then comes against radial knives 11 which cut the arc into longitudinal strips 25 suitable for racket strings or surgical sutures. The lower part 27, Fig. 4 of the intestine passes out below as a complete tube of internal layers partly covered with the under arc of outer layer, which tube is suitable for sausage skins. During this process the intestine is held stretched by a third loop 17 of wire at right angles to the previous loops 13, 15. The device comprises a body part 3 from one end of which project the loops. The spaced radial knives 11 are secured on the body to which is attached a guide 7 at the other end through which the strips are pulled. The lower part 27 may thereafter also be cut into strips. Various dimensions and shapes for the loops are given.
