Abstract

858,937. Catgut. BERGMAN, R. W., and LODDING, W. F. May 24, 1957 [May 24, 1956], No. 16594/57. Class 109. A slitting peg for removing one or two ribbons from an animal intestine comprises a main arm and a shorter secondary arm, both arms lying in a surface curved to conform to the natural curvature of an intestine and integrally joined to a base at the rear ends to form a wedge. In apparatus similar to that described in Specification 852,117 the metal or rigid plastics slitting peg 1 is so formed that a large intestine passing over two arms 28, 30 has two ribbons cut from it by blades 13, but should the intestine become narrower it is split by the spherical tip 32 of the short arm 30 and passes over only the arm 28, and has one ribbon cut from it by two of the blades 13. One or more of the resulting strips are twisted to form a strand which is dried and polished to uniform diameter for tennis racquet strings or sterilised and sealed for use as sutures and ligatures. Specification 746,587 also is referred to.
