Abstract

745,975. Skinning sausages. KARTRIDGPAK MACHINE CO. Jan. 18, 1954, No. 1488/54. Class 28(2). A string of sausages is automatically skinned by pulling the string against a plough just under the skin to disect the skin against an adjacent slitting knife, the apparatus comprising feeler fingers 129, 130 between which the sausages are moved which feelers close on a constriction between the sausages to actuate mechanism to untwist each individual sausage and then to supply air to blow out each constriction whereby the feelers are separated to stop further untwisting and to restart the pulling through of the string to restart the skinning. The untwisting is done by a head 14. A string of sausages, picked out from a receptacle 20, Fig. 1, is passed into a tank of water 18 heated by a thermostatically controlled electric heater 19 and is threaded between guide posts 27 and through a head 14-31 with a tubular rotatable centre 32 Fig. 5. The skin 82 is initially split by pulling it by hand against the slitter knife 70 until sufficient is pulled through to lead it between pull rolls 108, 109. The operation then proceeds in timed relation, the pull rolls 109 being separated when the centre 32 rotates a sausage therein to untwist it. Thereafter air blows out the necks thus separating the feelers 129, 130 to start the pulling and slitting. The air supply also serves to separate the skin from the flesh in preparation for the slitting knife to cut the skin. Fig. 5 shows the air supply at 42 with various gaskets 48 &c. to hold in the air between the outer fixed head 14 or 31 and the inner rotatable centre 32. The feelers 129 and 132 control the various motions through electromagnetic clutches and connections, Fig. 16 (not shown). The air supply controls are in Fig. 17 (not shown). U.S.A.
