Abstract

916,527. De-veining prawns and removing them from their shells. LAPEYRE, F. S., LAPEYRE, J. M., LAPEYRE, A. C., LAPEYRE, F. H., LAPEYRE, E. M., and LAPEYRE, E. M.. [trading as PEELERS CO.]. Dec. 28, 1960 [Oct. 27, 1960], No. 44457/60. Class 28 (2). Edible meat is recovered from crustacea by introducing fluid under pressure into the space within the shell while it is held substantially immovable. Prawns are laid side by side on a stainless-steel belt 20 driven continuously from a cam-shaft 32 carrying cams which control the various operations carried out on the prawns as they are carried along on the belt. A pivoted member 47 pcsitions the prawns for de-veining by a hollow plastic tube 58, guided into the prawn by shaft 57 and member 59, to sever the vein from the meat and shell. Vacuum chamber 52 is connected to tube 58 to withdraw the severed vein and washing water is supplied between shaft 57 and member 58. During deveining the prawn is held by a member 63 which also positions member 59. The de-veined prawns are pushed across belt 20 by a pivoted member 48 into meat ejection position. A member 46a holds the prawn with its tail end overhanging the belt 20 to receive needle 70 through which pressure is applied to expel the meat.
