Abstract
745,990. Removing waste from carton blanks. FEENY, C. J. (Miehle Printing Press & Manufacturing Co.). March 2, 1954, No. 6050/54. Class 31 (1). [Also in Group XXIII] Mechanism for automatically removing waste material from sheets of carton blanks cut by means of an impression cylinder 11, Fig. 1, coacting with a reciprocating die bed 12, comprises a rotatable drum 16 carrying elements 23, Fig. 4, for engaging the sheets and picking out the waste portions therefrom, the elements 23 being selectively positioned by engaging spaced projections 19 provided on the drum. The drum is driven in timed relation to the cylinder 11 and at a substantially reduced speed with respect thereto. The elements 23 each comprise a body portion having side walls carrying waste picking spurs and adapted to engage the sides of a projection 19, one of the side walls being provided with a locking member 22, Fig. 4, adapted to interlock releasably with a recess 21 in the side of a projection 19. The elements 23 are each provided with a lip 165, Fig. 10, adapted to engage a groove between projections 19. The elements may be modified, e.g. the side walls may be provided with cutting edges for dividing a long waste portion into shorter lengths or the side walls may be formed for supporting the sheets. Coacting with the drum 16 is a grooved cylinder 43 which is adjustably mounted for varying the clearance between the cylinder and drum according to the thickness of the sheets passed between them. The die-cut sheets are each conveyed to the drum 16 by means of two sets of driven reels 65, 108, Fig. 5, and co-operating drop-down rollers 82, 82<SP>1</SP>, the reels 65 being driven at a linear speed equal to the peripheral speed of the impression roller 11 and advancing the sheets until its leading edge engages guides 106 rotatably mounted on a shaft 107 supporting the-reels 108 so that the latter are first rotated at the same speed as the reels 65 but are then gradually decelerated, by means of a gear segment 109 oscillated by a cam 116 rotating with the drum 16. The drop-down rollers 82, 82<SP>1</SP> are controlled by means of cams 101, 1011 rotating with the drum 16. The sheets are prevented from slipping as they pass between the drum 18 and cylinder 43 by means of resilient friction rings 121, Fig. 3. The waste is stripped from the spurs of the elements 23 by means of combs 123, Fig. 3, and falls into a receptacle 132, Fig. 1. A curtain 133, Fig. 1, prevents waste from falling on the die bed 12. After the waste portions are removed from a sheet of box blanks, the leading edge of the sheet is guided into the bite of chain delivery grippers of a delivery mechanism 136 which carries them to a table 137, a reciprocating carriage supporting the trailing portion of each sheet as it is carried to the table. A tool (see Group XXIII) is provided to facilitate the mounting and removal of the elements on and from the projections on the drum.
