745,581. Batteries. ILLSLEY, S. A. May 19, 1954 [Sept. 16, 1953], No. 25569/53. Class 53. A device for indicating whether the electrolyte in a battery is at the required level comprises a stopper 10 having a threaded aperture to receive a threaded insulating tube 14 enclosing a lead rod 16 having a terminal 17 at its upper end and which is bent at its lower end 21 which lies in a slot in the tube 14. Tube 14 extends a small distance beyond the end 21 of the rod and engages a battery plate p when the device is in position. The electrolyte in the battery must thus cover the plates before it makes contact with the rod 16 when an external circuit is completed through a lamp. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which a metal ring 21a is embedded in an insulating tube 10a and is connected by a conducting part 16a to a terminal 17a. The tube 10a is closed by a plug 30 which is removed when the battery requires topping-up. Circuits are described and illustrated for switching in a lamp connected to the electrode 16 or 16a and a terminal of the battery.
