Abstract

745,489. Electrostatic generators. SOC. ANON. DE MACHINES ELECTROSTATIQUES. Nov. 6, 1953 [Nov. 6, 1952], No. 30857/53. Addition to 702,421. Class 35. An improvement in the electrostatic ignition impulse generator described in the parent Specification in which the sliding contacts between the exciter charge conveyers and the earth and inductor plates are replaced by sliding contact members which are flung off at speed leaving a narrow spark-gap for the passage of the charges produced. As in Fig. 6 of the parent Specification, the machine has alternately charged stator inductor plates 201, 202, while the rotor has a pair of charge conveyer plates 205 having distribution fingers 278 which discharge alternate polarity charges across narrow gaps to distribution studs 282 connected to ignition plugs (not shown). Between the plates 205 are pairs of exciter charge conveyer plates 226 connected to commutation fingers 302 by which they are alternately connected to earth studs 305 and studs 303, 304 connected to negative and positive inductor plates 201, 202 respectively. Each exciter plate carries a spring-loaded contact arm 308 by which direct contact is made with studs 303, 304, 305 at low speeds, e.g. when starting, but when normal speed is reached they are centrifugally disconnected leaving the normal sparkgap connection. Excessive build up of potential of the exciter plates is prevented by safety spark gaps 300, 228 at the other end of the machine.
