Abstract
715,010. Electrostatic generators. SOC. D'APPAREILS DE CONTROLE ET D'EQUIPEMENT DES MOTEURS (S.A.C.E.M.). Dec. 30, 1952 [Jan. 8, 1952], No. 33013/52. Class 35 An electrostatic generator for the ignition of I.C. engines has contact brushes engaging the plate on which charges are induced for conducting the generated charge to the load, these brushes being centrifugally raised from actual contact with the plates at such a speed that the generated voltage is sufficient to pass over a small spark-gap instead, thus dispensing with frictional wear. The machine has an external rotor 11 carrying a pair of mutually insulated charged plates 1, 2, which induce charges in a series of fixed plates 4. Brushes 9 earth the diametrically opposite pairs of stator plates in succession and brushes' 13 subsequently carry their induced charge to the inducing plates 1, 2 respectively. A distributer contact 17 connected to plate 1 feeds timed charges to electrode 18. The brushes 9, 13 are of spring material and at a certain speed are flung out of contact with the plates 4 into the position shown dotted, the charge then passing to point discharge brushes 14. In a modification (not shown), the spring brushes are restrained from more than a certain separation from the stator plates so that they can carry the spark discharge. It is stated that the brushes may be raised by suction or mechanical linkage.
