Abstract

745,296. Making electric lamps and like devices. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 20, 1953 [March 21, 1952], No. 7757/53. Class 39(2). In a lamp sealing machine of the type described in Specification 196,591, [Class 39(iii)], comprising a rotatable turret provided with work-holding heads around its periphery and heating means at work stations adjacent to the path of the heads, each head having a vertical spindle which rides upon a fixed cam track at its lower end, and at its upper end supports a lamp mount within the neck of a bulb held in axial alignment with the mount, the vertical spindle 7 is formed by concentric inner and outer sleeves 11, 12 respectively, with a longitudinal passage through the inner sleeve 11 and one between the sleeves, and a shoe member 21 which rides upon a fixed cam track 22 is adjustably mounted upon the bottom end of one of the sleeves 11, 12 and is formed by integrally connected concentric tubular portions which constitute telescoping extensions of each of the sleeves and are adjustable therealong. In the example the shoe 21 is screwed upon the lower end of the outer sleeve 12 and retained in position by a lock nut 31, this adjustment permitting accurate positioning of the mounts relative to the necks of the bulbs to which they are to be sealed. A web 26<SP>1</SP> which is integral with the shoe 21 carries an inner tubular sleeve or hub portion 25 which fits snugly on, and is slidable upon, the lower end of the inner sleeve 11. During the heating of the neck 5 of the bulb while at certain work stations the lower end of the inner sleeve 11 is aligned with a passage 23 in the cam track 22, which provides an exit for air vented from the bulb, and at a subsequent station or stations, after the neck has sealed to the flare 3, a part of the annular space between the wall of the shoe 21 and the inner sleeve or hub 25 is aligned with an air-inlet passage 28 adjacent to one of the passages 23 in the cam track. Compressed air from a pipe 29 is thus introduced and passes upward between the two sleeves 11, 12, to an outlet slot 26 in a flange 27 in the mount support, being thereby directed against the inside surface of the bulb neck 5 to cut off the excess neck portion or cullet below the flare 3. Specification 196,591, [Class 39(iii)], is referred to.
