Abstract

744,916. Rotary cultivators; mowing-machines. RANGER (FERRING), Ltd., E. F., and RANGER, E. F. March 26, 1954 [March 31, 1953; Sept. 1, 1953], Nos. 8961/53 and 24198/53. Classes 6 (1) and 6 (2). [Also in Group XXXI] A mower or rotary cultivator comprises a framework supported at the rear on one or more wheels or a roller 13 and provided with a seat 6 for the operator, and a steering pillar 23 mounted in a bearing 16 at the front of the framework and attached at its lower end to a carrier for a motor 31 driving one or more land wheels or rollers 32 and a cutter or cultivating tool 49, the carrier, wheel 32 and implement 49 being movable about the axis of the pillar 23. The frame is formed by braced U-shaped tubular members 10, 15 carrying foot-rests 30 for the operator. The carrier for the motor consists of an inverted U-shaped member 33 carrying a socket 34 embracing the pillar 23, a tubular member 35 attached to the socket 34, and a U- shaped member 36 the two limbs of which are attached to the limbs of the member 33 and the base is attached to the member 35. The motor is adjustably supported by means of a bracket 59, arm 64, and plates 55, 56. The motor drives, by means of a sprocket chain, a shaft 39 to which is secured a pulley 53 driving the cutter or tool, and to which the hub of the wheel 32 can be clutched so that the wheel 32 can be stationary while the cutter or tool continues to rotate. The cutter or tool is mounted in a casing 28, adjustable for height by means of a roller 9 and liftable out of operative position by a U-shaped foot-lever 45 pivoted at 46 and connected to a bar 43 on which the casing is pivoted. The bar 43 is attached at each end to a rod 42 slidably mounted in a tube 41 pivoted on the shaft 39. The tool can be held in raised position by a spring-pressed detent 48 releasable by means of an operating-lever 27 on the handle-bar or steering-wheel 24 secured to the pillar 23 and on which are also mounted the control levers for the throttle and the clutch.
