Class 6 (1) A rotary cultivator of the kind wherein a transverse rotor 63, of a length greater than the track of the rear wheels 61 of a supporting tractor, is driven from a transverse transmission shaft 37 itself driven by the power take-off 23 of the tractor, is characterized in that the rotor lies below the shaft 37, ahead of the depthadjusting wheel 79, and close to the tractorwheels 61. The cultivator comprises side-frames 29, 30 joined by a tubular cross-member 31 and carried by brackets 57 on a pair of arms 20 pivoted to the rear axle casing 22 of the tractor. The arms 20 are raised by a pair of hydraulic rams 28 pivoted to the arms and to fixed points on the tractor. The power take-off is connected by a jointed telescopic shaft 25 to a gear-box 43a containing a short longitudinal shaft 27 driving the transverse transmission shaft 37 through a dog-clutch 52 and bevel gears 51, 44, the clutch ring being controlled by a lever 122. The shaft 37 drives the rotor through a chain drive 34 mounted within a casing 33 integral with the side-frame 29. A vertical pillar 73 is secured to a bracket 67 and carries a further bracket 76 supporting the rotor-cover 62, the rear part 64 of which is adjustable relatively to a quadrant plate 66. The depth-wheel 79 is carried on the end of an arm 80 pivoted to the bottom of the pillar 73. The top of the pillar is pivoted to a bearing-block 86 on a tubular, telescopic, screw-threaded shaft 82 pivoted to the arm 80 and adjustable in length, to vary the rotor's working depth, by a handle 96. The end blades of the rotor 63 co-operate with a fixed ledger blade on the frame to cut loose vegetation that might entangle the rotor shaft.
