Abstract
744,836. Photo-mechanical printing surfaces and light-sensitive material therefor. PRINTING DIE CO. March 9, 1953 [March 20, 1952], No. 6472/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 98 (2). A matrix for use in the production of rubber or metal relief printing plates is made by producing a block of friable material, as by casting a mixture of plaster of Paris and water on plate glass and drying, applying a sealing coat as of a mixture of starch or wax emulsion with glycerin to the surface of the block which has been in contact with the plate glass, applying a coat of asphalt or mixed asphalt and gilsonite to the sealing coat, applying a layer of rubber latex containing a light-sensitive material such as bichromated glue and gelatin, exposing to light under a transparency, washing to remove unhardened parts of such layer, sandblasting to remove the asphalt, the sealing coat and a portion of the block from places unprotected by the hardened parts of the light-sensitive layer, and removing remaining parts of the latter, the asphalt and the sealing coat as by solvent. In casting printing plates from the matrix, suction may be applied to the reverse side thereof. The block of friable material with sealing coat, asphalt coat, and light-sensitive rubber latex layer is included in the terms of the claims.
