748,767. Photo-sensitive sheet for making a printing stencil. ECKARDT, C. Dec. 4, 1952 [Dec. 6, 1951; Sept. 30, 1952], No. 30843/52. Class 98 (2). A fibrous backing as of Yoshima paper is provided successively with (1) a diffusion layer of wax emulsion, (2) an intermediate layer of wax emulsion, and (3) a covering layer of hard resin emulsion with a light-sensitive substance which renders the layer water-insoluble on exposure to light. The diffusion and intermediate layers may be sensitized similarly, and the covering layer may contain, additionally, wax emulsion. In an example emulsions for the three layers comprise specified parts of (1) beeswax, ethyl sebacate, gum arabic, glycerin, ammonium bichromate and water; (2) similar to (1) but with omission of the glycerin; and (3) similar to (1) but with omission of the glycerin and addition of shellac and acetone. Each layer is dried after application, and the product may be exposed in the normal manner, developed in a water bath which is stated to wash out unexposed parts of the covering layer and parts of the intermediate layer lying therebelow but to let the diffusion layer remain, and dried to result in a stencil for printing. Albumin, gelatine, ceresin and stearin may be used in the emulsions and diazo sensitizers or silver salts may be used instead of bichromate. For printing, ink from a counter-pressure plate or cylinder, itself supplied from an inking roller, is supplied under pressure through to the diffusion layer and the paper, and darker or brighter tones may be produced in the impression by local variations in the height or resilience of the platen.
