Abstract

744,827. Retreading tyres. CHANNEL ISLANDS TYRE CO., Ltd. Dec. 23, 1953 [Dec. 24, 1952], No. 32717/52. Class 144 (2). A tyre 1 is retreaded with a series of interengaging pre-moulded vulcanized tread bands 4 which are bonded to the tyre by use of a cold setting cement 3 and applied pressure only. The series of bands 4 shown are formed with serrated edges 5 so that adjacent bands interfit. Pressure may be applied to the tread band after the cementing and positioning operation by spreading the tyre leads to reduce the tyre diameter and flatten the tread area, and then inserting the tyre into a closely fitting circumferential support, such as a deep hollow frustoconical ring member 6, the tyre then being inflated. The ring member 6 can accommodate a range of different-diameter tyres. Where preferred, separate pre-vulcanized rings, or extensions of the tread band, may be rebated into the tyre sidewalls and cold-bonded by clamping the tyre between metal side rings.
