Abstract

A lubricant consisting of a natural or synthetic hydrocarbon oil contains at least one organic nitro compound and at least one sulphurized unsaturated alcohol which is soluble in oil or can be brought into solution by a solvent. Organic nitro compounds specified are nitroparaffins, nitronaphthalenes, and nitronaphthols and meta-dinitrobenzene, bromodinitrobenzene, chloronitrobenzene, 2, 4-dinitrophenol and alkyl derivatives thereof. The sulphurized alcohol may be prepared by reacting the alcohol with sulphur; alcohols referred to are allyl alcohol, allyl carbinol, octene diol, dicyclopentadieneol and alpha- and beta-terpineol. Solvents mentioned are 2-ethylhexanol, 2-ethyl-1, 3hexane diol, 2-methyl-1, 4-pentane-diol, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether and diethylene glycol monobutyl ether. The hydrocarbon oil may be for example mineral oil, polymerized olefins and aromatics substituted by higher molecular weight alkyl radicals; the mineral oils may be thickened with soap or other thickeners to form greases.
