Abstract

744,758. Discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., BREADNER, R. L., and SIMMS, C. H. Sept. 23, 1953 [Oct. 1, 1952], No. 24636/52. Class 39 (1). A device such as a discharge lamp 7 is exhausted through an aperture 9 which is brought into register with an aperture 11 in the wall of an exhausting chamber, and afterwards sealed by applying a closure or plug from within the chamber to the aperture 9. In the embodiment shown, an oven 3 surrounds the lamp 7, which abuts against the chamber wall with an intervening gasket 12, the two apertures 9 and 11 being in alignment. The aperture 9 is stepped to form a seating for a closure washer 10 held on the end of a cranked movable rod 27, 33. When it is required to seal up the lamp, the cranked rod is moved downwards against a retracting spring by means of a solenoid 31 and armature 30. The washer 10 is of or coated with a thermoplastic such as polymerized ethylene, or a resin or glass solder, which softens and fuses in contact with the heated lamp base 8. Alternatively a greased washer of non-porous rubber may be used. The part 33 may be arranged as a magazine of washers 10 for application to several lamps successively. Prior to sealing, a predetermined quantity of mercury may be introduced into the lamp from a reservoir supply 16. A rod 17, actuated in a similar way to rod 27, has a recess 18 which, as the rod moves downwards, transfers a globule of mercury from the reservoir into the lower part of the exhausting chamber. Here it falls into a funnel 24, which is so shaped and adjusted as to guide it through aperture 9 into the lamp. The funnel is pivoted so that it is temporarily pushed out of the way by a finger 34 on the crank 33 as the latter descends for the sealing operation. The lamp is accurately positioned by the engagement of the base terminals (not shown) with locating springs (not shown) attached to the periphery of aperture 11, and which also act as conductors for heating the lamp electrode during processing. Specification 744,751, [Group XXXVI], is referred to.
