Abstract

916,717. Capping electric lamps. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 10, 1961 [Dec. 5, 1960], No. 41766/60. Class 39 (2). [Also in Groups XXXVI and XL (a)] The envelope of an electric lamp comprises a glass base through which leads to the filament, or electrodes in the case of a discharge lamp, are sealed, the base being sealed to a cylindrical metal member having at least one slot therein in which is engaged a projection on the inner surface of a lamp cap of such dimensions as closely to surround the metal member so that the filament or electrodes are accurately located in relation to the cap. The cylindrical member, the lead wires and sufficient powdered glass to form the base are assembled in a mould and the assembly heated to fuse the glass and simu taneously seal the lead wires and lugs on the cylindrical member therein. The member 14 may be in the form of a split cylinder with upstanding lugs 15 for sealing into the base 4 and spaced apertures 16 into which tongues 17 pressed from the cap 3 are engaged and turned over to secure the cap firmly in place. The base may also be formed from a short length of glass tubing and may be provided with an exhaust tubulation during moulding. Alternatively, an aperture can be left in the base, into which the tubulation is subsequently sealed. Specification 861,361 is referred to.
