A space heater comprises an electrically heated rod 6 or a gas heater of bar form supported by vertical end plates 1 between the upper edges of which is an upwardly bowed parabolic reflector 2 with the heater 6 in its axial focus line so that heat is reflected down on to a pair of lower reflectors 9 comprising plane rectangular sheets extending between the end plates 1 at 45 degrees to the axial plane of the parabolic reflector 2 so that heat is reflected out substantially horizontally. Air rises between the reflectors 9, the top edges of which are bent out at 12 and spaced apart and after passing over the heater 6 passes through apertures 23 in the reflector 2 and is deflected out under the edges of a hood 25 spaced above the reflector 2. The floor beneath the heater 6 is protected from heat by a polished channel member 19 extending between the end plates 1 acting as a reflector and carrying a junction box for the heater on its underside. A wire mesh guard 30 may extend along each side of the heater from the lower edges of the reflector 2 to the base of the reflectors 9. However, if the heater is to be placed adjacent, a wall, the latter is protected from the horizontally reflected heat by a flat rectangular reflector plate pivoted at its lower edge to the base of the reflector 9 so that it may lie on the reflector 9 or may be turned outwardly through 90 degrees and be held in this position to reflect the heat upwardly. The reflectors 9 may be adjustable so that the direction of heat reflected therefrom is also adjusted. The ends of the heater 6 are carried by clips 7 in the end plates 1, and removable domed caps may cover apertures in the end plates to give access to the ends of the heater.
