[Also in Group XXIII] A veterinary surgical instrument for use in rumenotomy comprises gripping components interconnected near their opposite ends by couplings co-operating with the gripping components to enclose a long narrow rumen-receiving space, the couplings being mutually adjustable so that the components can be arranged parallel or at any required angle to each other. Two tubes 10, 11 are held side by side in the same plane by a U-shaped member 12. Screwthreaded bolts 13, 18 are pivoted to each end of one tube 11, one of the bolts 13 passing through a hole 16 in one end of the other tube 10 and the other bolt 18 passing through a slot 19 in the other end of the latter tube 10 so that it may be pivoted clear of the end of the tube 10. The bolts 13, 18 are each secured by thumb nuts 17 so that the tubes 10, 11 may be held in any desired position relative to one another. For gripping a protruding part of the rumen during rumenotomy each tube 10, 11 is provided with resilient gripping means in the form of a sheet 23, Fig. 3, of relatively soft or sponge-like rubber folded round a length of rubber tubing 24 and secured to the tube by clamp strips 20, 21 and thumb screws 25. During rumenotomy a part 8 of the rumen protruding through the side 9 of an animal is held between the gripping means 23, part of the gripping means 23 pressing against'the side 9 of the animal. According to the Provisional Specification alL the parts of the apparatus except the gripping means are made of stainless steel.
