Abstract

Mixtures of a monomer with its pulverulent polymer are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst comprising a difficulty soluble salt of a sulphinic acid, a quaternary ammonium salt, and/or an alkali or ammonium chloride or sulphate, and an acid. The monomer may contain small quantities of stabilizer, e.g. hydroquinone, fillers, and/or pigments, e.g. calcium carbonate, titanium oxide, or cadmium red. Methyl methacrylate with its polymer is the exemplified monomer/polymer mixture. The salt of sulphinic acid may be calcium benzene sulphinate, strontium benzene sulphinate or the corresponding salts of toluene sulphinic acid or naphthalene sulphinic acid. Specified acids are phosphoric, hypophosphorous and boric acid. Quarternary ammonium salts mentioned are tetrabutyl ammonium chloride, tetrabenzyl ammonium chloride. The process may be used in dentistry, e.g. in the manufacture of artificial teeth and for fillings.
