Abstract

Polymers of ethylenically unsaturated organic monomers are polymerized, e.g. in bulk or aqueous media, in the presence of a sulphinic acid or of a salt of sulphinic acid and a quaternary base or salt. If desired the sulphinic acid and a quaternary base may be the sulphinic salt of a quaternary base. The polymerizable mix may also contain preformed polymers, fillers, pigments, phosphoric acid, hypophosphorous acid, boric acid, methacrylic acid, or an alkali, ammonium, or alkaline earth salt, e.g. ammonium chloride or sulphate. Specified sulphinic acids are lauryl, benzene, toluene and naphthalene sulphinic acids, and suitable salts are the alkali, alkaline and ammonium salts of these acids. Quaternary salts and bases mentioned are di-isobutylphenoxyethoxyethyldimethylbenzyl ammonium hydroxide, tetrabenzyl ammonium chloride, tributylstearyl ammonium chloride, stearyldimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride, di-isobutylphenoxyethoxyethyldimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride, lauryldibutylbenzyl ammonium chloride, salts of ethylene-imine bases, and oxonium, stibonium, sulphonium, arsonium, and phosphonium free bases and salts. Monomers specified are methyl methacrylate, and methacrylates of polyhydric alcohols such as glycol, glycerine, or pentaerythrite. The preformed polymer may be polymethyl methacrylate and the pigments titanium oxide, or cadmium red. In aqueous media gelatine may be used as the emulsifier. The process may be used in dentistry.
