Abstract

744,044. Mineral-mining apparatus. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS), Ltd. Dec. 29, 1952 [Dec. 28, 1951], No. 30370/51. Class 68(1) [Also in Group-XXX] Apparatus for cutting mineral from, and conveying it to a point remote from, a face comprises a base plate 10 on which is mounted a cutting unit comprising a frame supporting a pickcarrying endless chain 12, the peripheral configuration of which can be varied since the guide channel accommodating the chain 12 on the frame is formed of adjustable, pivotally connected elements, and a hood 22 that collects and guides the cut mineral into an internally, helically ribbed pipe 18 that urges the mineral rearwardly when it is rotated. The endless chain 12 is driven by suitable gearing 20, 21, 16 from the pipe 18 and is provided with a pilot drill 15. The pipe 18 may be rotated either directly from a motor situated on the base plate, or through a series of coupled, internally helically ribbed pipes 24, some of which or the one furthest from the pipe 18 are or is rotated by separate motors or motor. When the drive is applied to the end of the pipe line, the drive unit consists of a driven pipe 34 coupled to the pipe line and rotated by a motor 30 and advanced by hydraulic jacks 40, the pipe 34 sliding within a pipe 36. When a new pipe is to be added to the pipe line the pipe 34 is unscrewed and withdrawn, and stops holding a pipe on an inclined lamp are released to allow the pipe to move against further stops by which it is aligned with the pipe line to which it is coupled on advanced and rotation of pipe 34. The drive unit may be duplicated. T-couplings may be inserted in the pipe line, each limb of pipe line extending from said couplings being driven by a separate motor.
