Abstract

An extreme pressure lubricant comprises mineral oil, or a polyalkylene glycol, and a substance of the formula:- <FORM:0743994/III/1> wherein R1 and R2 are aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic-substituted aliphatic, aromatic, organic heterocyclic or acyl radicles which may be substituted, R is hydrogen or an alkyl or aryl radicle, X is oxygen or sulphur, and m and n are whole numbers. Polyalkylene glycols mentioned are those derived from ethylene, propylene or butylene oxide, or mixtures thereof, for example a polyethylene glycol having a molecular; weight of 400. The lubricant may contain other ingredients such as colour-improving agents, antioxidants, foam-preventing agents, setting point depressants, viscosity-improving agents and other extreme pressure agents. In the examples, mineral oil compositions are described which contain dithiocarbonic acid-o-(monopropyleneglycol ethylhexyl ether)-s-(propyleneglycol butyl ether); dithiocarbonic acid-o-(tripropyleneglycol 2-methyl-1, 3-pentanediol ether)-s-(tripropyleneglycol acetic ester); dithiocarbonic acid-o-(dipropyleneglycol dicyclopentadienol ether)-s-(dipropyleneglycol acetic ester); dithiocarbonic acid - o - (pentapropyleneglycol octyphenol ether)-s-(propyleneglycol acetic ester); or dithiocarbonic acid-o-(propyleneglycol tert-butylcresol ether)-s-(propyleneglycol ethyl butyric ester).
