Abstract
743,749. Jig-saw puzzles. PHILLIPS, C. W. May 10, 1954 [July 31, 1953], No. 21340/53. Class 132(3) Two transparent layers 4, 5 of a threecolour jig-saw puzzle have colour surfaces R, B ,printed in reverse to minimise the effect of refraction when the layers are superposed and act as colour filters above a white opaque base layer 3 which has a printed surface Y. The printed surfaces R, B, Y are red or magenta, blue or bluegreen and yellow, and with the puzzle correctly assembled produce a single coloured picture. One or more layers may be subdivided into jig-saw sections. The coloured pictorial matter is preferably printed after the layers have been cut into interlocking sections and the sections appropriate to each layer may have shapes distinctive only of the one layer. Alternatively, two or all layers can be subdivided by being cut simultaneously when superimposed. The sections of each layer may be such as to allow them to interlock in various positions and thus permit effects other than a single picture to be produced. A baseboard 1 has a raised flange 2 along one side and one transverse edge, the flange facilitating alignment of the sections of the puzzle. A two layer puzzle embodying two colours is specified.
