Abstract

743,341. Making screws. B.E.V.I. BULLONERIA E VITERIA ITALIANA SOC. A R.L. Feb. 22, 1954 [Feb. 20, 1953], No. 4745/53. Addition to 682,136. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Forging.-In a modification of the invention of the parent Specification for the manufacture of screw blanks, each having a head 19, Fig. 2, a larger diameter shank portion 23, a smaller diameter shank portion 22 which is subsequently threaded by rolling, and a point 21, bar stock having alternate portions 11, 12 of larger and smaller diameter is advanced through a die 14 which grips the larger diameter portion 11, whilst the head 19 is upset thereon by a punch 18, the stock is then advanced by an amount equal to the length of the blank and the latter is cut-off from the stock by severing and pointing tools 20. The heading punch may contain a central punch for forming a turning cavity in the head. Alternatively the cavity may be formed or the head may be slotted after the thread rolling operation. Instead of countersunk head, cheese or round head screws may be formed by providing recesses in the die 14 or in punch 18 respectively.
