Abstract

743,175. Temperature-responsive actuating- elements. SAMSON APPARATEBAU-AKT.- GES. Oct. 8, 1951 [Oct. 9, 1950], No. 23423/51. Class 64(2). In a temperature responsive device (e.g controlling heat or temperature by means of a rod 8, Fig. 1 operating a valve or switch according to the expansion of fluid 2 in a chamber 4 tube 3 and pilot bull 1) which has a resilient cylinder extending in to a container 1, excess pressure is absorbed by a gas-filled ex tensible member such as a bellows having concentric corrugated tubular walls 24, 25 and filled with ai: 28 at 20-100 atmos pheres. In norma working, a bellows only is operated bu after this is com pletely contracted, the safety bellows 24, 25 acting like a spring, is contracted. In one embodiment, the pilot bulb 1 is sealed by a bellows 9 which constitutes one form of the resilient cylinder and is adjustable in length, to regulate the operation of the rod 8, by a sleeve nut 14, Fig. 2, rotated by means of its squared end 15 to raise or lower a screwthreaded adjusting spindle 12 attached to the base 11 of the bellows 9. The nut 14 does not move axially, being held from downward movement by its flange 16 resting on a base 17, until excess pressure causes the bellows 9 to contract against the pressure in the separate safety bellows 24, 25. In Fig. 4, the safety bellows slaes the bulb 1 and thus constitutes the resilient cylinder. This device is regulated by rotation of a sleeve 45 to raise, by means of an internal screwthread, a member 43 supporting the spindle 12 by means of a nut 40. The device is set according to the reading on a scale 46 indicated by an edge 47 on the sleeve 45. In embodiments having similar safety bellows, Figs. 3, 5 (not shown), a sleeve nut on the spindle rotates a pointer by means of a worm gear to indicate the temperature setting or, instead of the spindle, a cord or tape rotates a pulley bearing a pointer. The setting is made in the latter embodiment by adjustment of the tension in a spring mounted on the pulley-spindle to oppose pressure in the safety bellows 24, 25.
