Abstract

743,144. Elastic valves. WINN & CO., Ltd., C. July 20, 1954 [July 21, 1953], No. 20150/53. Class 135. A valve of the diaphragm type has a straight through bore 20a adapted to be closed by a flexible diaphragm 24 which is of substantially ellipsoidal shape and has its major axis at right angles to the axis of the bore 20a, the seating for the diaphragm being formed in a transversely enlarged portion of the bore and having in transverse section a flat central portion 20k in the same plane as the bottom of the bore 20a and merging at its side edges with oppositely inclined straight portions 20h extending upwardly to meet the clamping surface 20g on the valve body 20. The diaphragm is urged into engagement with its seating by a pressure member or actuator 26 the surface of which is complementary to the seating. The clamping face 20g has an elliptical opening 20e and is formed with bolt holes 20f. The diaphragm is clamped between the surface 20g and a flange 23a of a domed cover 23 also of elliptical shape by bolts and nuts 21, 22. The diaphragm 24 is formed with bolt holes 24c and has an upstanding boss 24k expanded in a frusto-conical hole in the actuator 26 by a washer 27 and a nut 28 on a screw 24m moulded in and bonded to the boss 24k. The actuator 26 is also of hollow substantially ellipsoidal shape so that it can slide without turning in the cover 23. The actuator 26 is formed with apertured lugs or bearings 26f adapted to receive a transverse pin 29 connected to the lower end of an actuating screw 30. The latter is raised and lowered by an axially fixed sleeve 31 having an internally threaded part 31a and bearing an operating head 32. The plane of the clamping surface 20g is coincident with or slightly above a horizontal plane through the centres of the inlet and outlet branches 20c. Specification 624,576 is referred to. The Provisional Specification shows forms in which the diaphragm has a pendant convolution in the open position of the valve.
